Togetherness at JOMEC

Togetherness at JOMEC was a student-led initiative consisting of a series of events, aiming to foster a sense of community for every member of the School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) at Cardiff University - which includes students, academic staff, and professional service staff.

Instead of the usual social events, Togetherness focused on unconventional bite-sized events that are more flexible in terms of timeframe, physical presence, and budget. We also emphasised the elements of community co-creation, self-expression, and inclusivity.

In March 2024, we organised three Wear Pink Wednesdays to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, which were participated in by students and members of staff at JOMEC. Other events include Community Easter Egg Doodles, Community Collage for World Press Freedom Day, and Bubbles for the Summer.

In May 2024, I received the Enriching Student Life Award (ESLA) as the Student Rep of the Year in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The Enriching Student Life Awards (ESLAs) are an annual event, created to recognise the staff and students who contribute to the Cardiff student experience.

The comments for my nomination were: "There is no doubt that Zhen Ni is an absolutely outstanding student. She has contributed to the school in ways that we have not seen before. Students feel they can speak to her about any issues, she fully engages with the student support team to pass on any concerns, sets up events, represents the school at open days, trains ambassadors and has also contributed to the JOMEC social media pages."
